Happy (Nearly) New Year! What's Your Resolution?
23 / 12 - Category: Blog
Good grief. 2010 is literally but a few sleeps away. And that can only mean one thing: it’s New Year’s Resolution time. Ah yes, it’s that time of year when we close our eyes, cross our fingers and make bold and grandiose statements about what we will be gaining (and losing) over the coming 12 months. That’s the beauty of dreams – you can be whatever and whoever you want. But how often have you got to the end of a year only to look back and wish you’d saved more money / gone on a holiday / bought a house / paid off the credit card / started a business / sorted out your finances etc etc etc. Admit it, we all have…but there’s always next year, isn’t there. Which is, like, in a week. So why not get ahead of the game and start planning now to ensure you finish 2010 with a smile on your face and a big tick on your “to do” list. It’s time to start planning to turn those dreams into reality.
Don’t worry, help is at hand. Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a look at some of the costs of achieving a dream. Regardless of what 2010 holds for you, from moving out of home, organising a wedding, buying a car, getting your first mortgage, expanding the family or saving for that much-needed holiday, don’t just plan for, or think about the expected – it’s often the completely unexpected, straight out of left field, “where did THAT come from” surprises that can really test you and bring your best laid plans completely unstuck. The key is to be organised – financially, physically and emotionally – and well prepared for any unexpected bumps you may encounter along the way.
If only we could just get through the festive season first. So once you’ve attended the office Christmas party, digested the feast, kissed your long-lost relatives and re-acquainted yourself with the couch (will it be the Boxing Day Test or the Sydney to Hobart this year?), set aside some “me time” to start planning for the year ahead. May not sound like the most glamorous way to spend your Christmas break, but hey, you have to start somewhere. So, without further ado:
- What’s your goal for 2010?
- What’s your timeframe? Make it achievable just to ensure you stay on track.
- How much can you afford to save each week/fortnight/month? Work out your budget, include all your current and unavoidable expenses, and be sensible about what you can realistically achieve.
- What are you prepared to sacrifice to reach your goal?
- How can you stay on track and clearly focused on the end-game? Good things really are worth the wait, so be patient and committed to the cause.
Before you know it your feet will be in the starters’ blocks and you’ll be off and racing into another decade. Ah 2010, it always seemed so far away but maybe, just maybe, it will be your year. Only question is: are you ready?
